The Royals had more questions than answers entering the offseason. The Nos. 3, 4 and 5 starters are up in the air with plenty of candidates but no sure bets. Kansas City hopes the acquisition of 1B Mike Jacobs will beef up a lineup that was in need of power, and the acquisition of CF Coco Crisp gives the team an infusion of speed at the top of the lineup. BIGGEST NEEDS: General manager Dayton Moore will be on the lookout for a veteran free agent to plug into the rotation.

--C/1B J.R. House, RHP Franquelis Osoria and C Matt Tupman signed minor league deals with the Royals and were invited to the team's big-league spring training. House, 29, appeared in three games with the Astros this season, and he has also had brief big-league stints with the Pirates and Orioles. He has a .167 career major league average in 32 games. Osoria, 27, made 43 relief appearances for Pittsburgh this year, going 4-3 with a 6.08 ERA.

The Royals have traded away two valuable pieces of their bullpen, leaving a gaping hole that general manager Dayton Moore will attempt to fill before spring training. The Royals sent Leo Nunez to the Marlins in an Oct. 30 trade for slugging first baseman Mike Jacobs. On Nov. 19, the Royals sent Ramon Ramirez to the Red Sox for center fielder Coco Crisp. Nunez and Ramirez were valuable right-handed setup men for closer Joakim Soria. Nunez went 4-1 with a 2.
